The Belafonte

I quit my job and bought a boat.
Day 1, week 1 : Boat renovation. On 4/12/12 we had my Dad in tow visiting from Florida specially to help us with our undertaking. The surveyor came. Good news: great hull and seaworthy with an engine worth more than we paid for the actual boat - score for us!! Bad news, or more tiresome, grueling work news: we had a lot to do! The interior walls and floors were rotted through, the upper deck aluminum stations swayed in the wind and our engine compartment and hatches had weeping, sagging fiberglass and they were buckling underfoot. The surveyor, Jim, who must of thought we were completely insane with all his years of experience, gave us some caring and real advice about what we needed to do. A week later we received his official survey with a fancy stamp of approval and a long list of fix-it’s. By that time we were already knee deep in demolition having to go straight down to the stringers and fiberglass walls. Dad had already reinforced the stringers and put in sturdy, brand new plywood floors that were so solid we knew we could build the rest of the interior on top of them without a problem. Now about that….

sean-timothy asked: did you really quit your job and buy a boat? if so, what kind... been thinking about doing the same... motor, sail? where did you take it?

I did! It’s a 1969 Nautaline Houseboat and it will sit in the harbor in Newport, RI for the whole summer on a brilliant mooring. Let us know if you do it!!!
